Discernment Questions
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

As you prayerfully consider your decision to participate in the Spiritual Exercises, use these questions as a guideline for discernment.  If you have questions regarding the Exercises, please make an appointment to speak with me.  We can use these questions and your responses as the basis for our conversation.

1.     What have been your ongoing themes and challenges in your relationship with God?

What images of God were presented to you or taught to you when you were a child?

What images of God/Jesus have you come to know through your own experience and seeking?

What other images of God/Jesus would you like to come to know and relate to?

2.     Describe your spirituality as you know it now.

3.     Describe you current experience of prayer.  How do you pray?  How long have you been praying this way?

4.     What assists you in your prayer (journaling, movement, music, etc.)?

5.     How familiar do you feel you are with Scripture?

6.     What kind of support system do you have?  Do they understand about this commitment and will they give you what you need from them?

7.     Are there any special considerations in your life that might affect your participation, factors that would not necessarily but could become obstacles to your participation?

8.     Are you truly able to make the time commitment: about an hour daily of personal prayer, weekly group meetings, monthly Spiritual Direction?  The Spiritual Exercises cannot be just another involvement; it may mean setting aside other involvements for this year.

9.     Do you feel you have enough interior freedom to move out of the Exercises if the timing is not right for you to continue the Exercises?
